Lake Wichita Park

Lake Wichita Park, located in Wichita Falls, Texas, is a sprawling 234-acre public space offering a variety of recreational opportunities amidst scenic surroundings. Situated on the southern side of Wichita Falls near Texas Highway 79, the park is adjacent to Lake Wichita, a historic reservoir impounded in 1901. The lake itself spans 1,224 acres and is a popular spot for fishing, with species such as white and hybrid striped bass, channel catfish, and white crappie commonly found.

The park features a 2.6-mile concrete hiking and biking trail that runs from Fairway Avenue to the dam, connecting with other trails in the area, such as those leading to Lucy Park. Visitors can enjoy various activities, including sports at the lighted baseball, softball, and football fields or a round on the 18-hole disc golf course, which is considered one of the most challenging in the region. For families and casual visitors, the park offers a playground, picnic areas, and a 10-unit picnic shelter that can accommodate up to 60 people.

Unique amenities at Lake Wichita Park include the only model airplane landing strip in Texas state parks and an off-leash dog park for pet owners. The park also houses a stunning veterans memorial and several open spaces ideal for walking, jogging, or simply relaxing. Despite its recreational charm, the lake itself faces ecological challenges and is undergoing revitalization efforts to restore its health and improve its role as a community hub.
