About Liberty Park in Salt Lake City
Liberty Park is Salt Lake City's oldest and second-largest public park, spanning 80 acres in the heart of the city. Established in 1881 when the city purchased the land from Brigham Young's estate, it has been a central recreational space for residents and visitors for over 140 years.
The park features a diverse landscape with large, mature trees providing ample shade, expansive grassy areas, and a scenic pond with two islands. A 1.5-mile woodchip jogging path encircles the park, offering a popular route for runners, walkers, and cyclists. The park also includes a 1.42-mile paved path for those who prefer a smoother surface.
Liberty Park is home to several notable attractions. The Tracy Aviary, established in 1938, is one of only two free-standing aviaries in the United States. The park also houses the Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts and the Isaac Chase Mill, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the oldest commercial building still standing in Utah.
For families and children, the park offers multiple playgrounds, including the large Rotary Playground and a splash pad that operates seasonally. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy various facilities including tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and bocce ball courts. The park also features a public swimming pool and seasonal amusement rides such as a Ferris wheel and carousel.
Throughout the year, Liberty Park serves as a venue for community events, festivals, and gatherings. On Sundays during warmer months, the park hosts popular drum circles that last all day, attracting a diverse crowd of musicians and spectators.
Liberty Park's history, diverse amenities, and central location make it a beloved green space in Salt Lake City, providing recreational opportunities and a natural respite for city dwellers of all ages.
