About Lindsey Gardens Park in Salt Lake City
Lindsey Gardens Park is a historic public space located in the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah. The park spans 12.8 acres and offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages.
Established in the mid-19th century, Lindsey Gardens has a rich history dating back to the early days of Salt Lake City. The park originally featured amenities such as croquet courses, a baseball diamond, an arbor-like dance hall, and even a swimming pool that doubled as a baptismal font for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Today, Lindsey Gardens Park is divided into several distinct areas, each serving different purposes. The park includes multiple baseball and softball fields, with the largest field situated atop a steep hill in the northeast portion. A white-painted cinderblock concession and scorers building accompanies the main field.
The southern part of the park consists of an un-programmed open space, featuring a significant downward slope from north to south. Large mature trees line the northern and southern perimeters of this section, creating a natural and shaded environment.
For families and children, Lindsey Gardens offers a playground area located south of a rustic shelter structure known as the bowery. The playground includes equipment such as a merry-go-round, swings, slides, and monkey bars.
Dog owners will appreciate the designated off-leash area within the park, allowing pets to roam freely in a controlled environment.
Lindsey Gardens Park also participates in environmental conservation efforts. As part of a Native Plant Program, the park is involved in initiatives to support monarch butterflies, which are currently under federal protection and may be added to the threatened species list by the end of 2025.
