About Fort Hunt Park in Alexandria

Fort Hunt Park is a historic site and recreational area located along the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia, just a few miles south of Alexandria. The park is part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway and is managed by the National Park Service.

Originally part of George Washington's River Farm, the land later became a military installation during the Spanish-American War. Fort Hunt played various roles throughout its history, including serving as a Civilian Conservation Corps camp in the 1930s and a top-secret military intelligence facility during World War II, known as "P.O. Box 1142."

Today, Fort Hunt Park preserves remnants of its military past while offering visitors a range of recreational opportunities. The park features several historic structures, including gun batteries and a fire control tower from its days as a coastal defense fort. Visitors can explore these remnants and learn about the park's rich history through interpretive signs and ranger-led programs.

The park's natural setting includes a mix of open fields and wooded areas, providing habitat for various wildlife species and opportunities for nature observation. The park's location along the Potomac River offers scenic views and access to the Mount Vernon Trail, a popular multi-use path that connects with other nearby attractions.

Fort Hunt Park is a popular destination for picnicking, with several reservable picnic areas and pavilions available from April through October. The park also hosts community events, including summer concerts at one of its pavilions.
