About Kingstowne Park in Alexandria
Kingstowne Park is a 76.9-acre public park located on Old Telegraph Road in Alexandria, Virginia. The park lies within the Rose Hill Planning District and Lee Supervisory District of Fairfax County. It is jointly owned by the Fairfax County Park Authority and the Board of Supervisors.
The park consists largely of undeveloped natural areas, with about two-thirds of the site used for wetlands mitigation and stormwater management. There are three wetlands mitigation areas and two wet ponds within the park boundaries. A single stone dust trail and small picnic area maintained by the Park Authority can be found in the northwest corner of the site.
Kingstowne Park contains several notable natural resource areas. One 10-acre section along the western boundary includes side slope and riparian forest communities, representing one of the best remaining examples of native coastal plain forest in eastern Fairfax County. The forest contains a diverse mix of native trees and plants like white oak, chestnut oak, tulip tree, maple-leaved viburnum, and various fern species.
A network of informal, unmaintained trails exists throughout the park and is regularly used by the local community. The Park Authority has proposed plans to maintain or upgrade the existing trail network while preserving much of the park in its natural state. Community input has emphasized a desire to keep the park as natural as possible while improving trail access and replacing an existing dam structure.
