Rockwood Park is a 171-acre multi-use facility located in Chesterfield County, near Richmond, Virginia. Established in 1975, it is the county's oldest park and is situated at the intersection of Courthouse and Hull Street Roads. The park features a diverse range of recreational facilities and natural areas, making it a popular destination for local residents and visitors alike.
The park boasts an extensive trail system, with 5.5 miles of both paved and unpaved paths winding through forested uplands and riparian woodlands. These trails offer opportunities for hiking, jogging, and nature observation. The park's natural areas are home to a variety of wildlife, including woodpeckers, hawks, songbirds, turtles, dragonflies, frogs, and several species of snakes. Visitors may also spot native orchids and, after rainy periods, a diverse array of mushrooms.
At the heart of Rockwood Park is the Nature Center, a log cabin-style building that houses an array of native reptiles and amphibians, along with informative displays. The Nature Center offers educational programs for visitors of all ages, including pre-kindergarten nature programs and senior activities.
For sports enthusiasts, the park features a complex of ball fields and game courts. There are seven lighted baseball/softball fields, three lighted basketball courts, eight lighted pickleball courts, and six lighted tennis courts. The park also includes horseshoe pits and volleyball facilities.
Rockwood Park caters to dog owners with the Ruff House Dog Park, which provides off-leash areas for pets to exercise and socialize. The park is open from 7:30 a.m. until dark, with specific rules in place to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors.
Other notable features of the park include an archery range, an orienteering course, and community garden plots. The park also provides amenities such as picnic shelters, playgrounds, concession stands, and restroom facilities.
