About Deep Run Park in Richmond
Deep Run Park & Recreation Center is a public park located in western Henrico County, Virginia, situated at the northwest corner of Gaskins Road and Ridgefield Parkway. The park encompasses 164.792 acres of land, acquired by Henrico County in multiple phases. The initial 52.045 acres were purchased in 1978, followed by an additional 108.767 acres in 1979. Although the land was acquired in the late 1970s, the park did not open for public use until 1987. A final 3.98 acres were added to the park in 2004, bringing it to its current size.
The park features an extensive area of woodlands dotted with ponds, including two 2-acre ponds with accessible shorelines. A swampy creek bed complete with a boardwalk adds to the park's natural appeal. Mixed-use trails crisscross through the woods and encircle each of the ponds, providing visitors with opportunities for hiking, walking, and nature observation. The park's landscape is further enhanced by open spaces and green areas suitable for various recreational activities.
Deep Run Park is home to diverse wildlife. Visitors may spot eastern painted turtles and eastern river cooters basking near the water's surface, while dragonflies such as eastern amberwings and slaty skimmers skim across the ponds. The wooded areas provide habitat for birds including northern cardinals, Carolina wrens, and occasionally red-shouldered hawks. During winter, yellow-rumped warblers and American goldfinches can be observed in the park.
The park includes a recreation center that offers various amenities and programs for the community. This center features meeting rooms suitable for events of different sizes, as well as a fitness center equipped with modern exercise equipment. Throughout the year, the recreation center hosts a variety of classes and events for both children and adults.
