About Surrey Downs Park in Bellevue
Surrey Downs Park is a 10.5-acre community park located in Bellevue, Washington. This recently renovated green space offers a blend of recreational facilities and natural beauty for residents and visitors alike.
The park's centerpiece is the "Great Lawn," a large, open grassy area encircled by a pedestrian path. This expansive meadow provides ample space for various activities such as picnicking, playing frisbee, or casual soccer games. The walking path surrounding the lawn offers a pleasant route for strolls and light exercise.
Surrey Downs Park features strategically placed berms and lookout points that provide scenic views. On clear days, visitors can enjoy vistas of Mount Rainier. The park's elevated areas also offer vantage points to observe the East Link light rail trains once they begin operations.
Historically, the land where Surrey Downs Park now stands has seen various uses. A century ago, it was a filbert orchard. Some of the historic trees have been preserved on the site, with new filbert trees planted to fill in gaps, maintaining a connection to the area's past. The property later served as an elementary school from 1962 to 1981 and subsequently as a courthouse until its transformation into a park.
The park's design incorporates elements that cater to different age groups and interests. For families with children, there is a playground area. Sports enthusiasts can make use of the basketball court. The park also includes picnic shelters, providing covered areas for gatherings and outdoor meals.
Accessibility and convenience were considered in the park's development, with the inclusion of restroom facilities and parking areas for visitors. The transformation of Surrey Downs Park, following its acquisition by the City of Bellevue in 2005, has created a versatile community space that balances active recreation with opportunities for relaxation and nature appreciation.
