About Urban Triangle Park in Seattle
Urban Triangle Park is a small public green space located in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Opened in 2019, this 8,722 square foot park serves as a valuable community gathering area in the rapidly developing downtown district.
The park's design incorporates an open lawn area, seating edges, and landscaping to provide a seamless transition between the urban environment and natural elements. A central custom play structure, added in 2024, offers climbing opportunities for children while referencing historical neighborhood structures. The play area was designed to evoke the "spite mounds" from the early 1900s Denny Hill Regrade, adding an educational element to the recreational space.
One unique feature of Urban Triangle Park is its integrated cafe, which has direct access to the park grounds. This makes it the first Seattle Parks and Recreation property to incorporate such an amenity into its design. The park also utilizes sustainable design elements, including stormwater management infrastructure with bioretention planters, rain gardens, and permeable pavement.
Public art is another highlight of the park. The "Escape Destinations" installation by artist Janet Zweig consists of two signs that display rotating fictional place names from literature, games, film, and other media. This interactive artwork gives the park a new name each day, encouraging visitors to discover and explore new cultural references.
Urban Triangle Park provides a much-needed green space for downtown workers, residents, and visitors alike. Its thoughtful design and amenities make it a popular spot for relaxation, play, and community gatherings in the heart of Seattle's urban core.
