About Virgil Flaim Park in Seattle
Virgil Flaim Park is a spacious urban green space located in the Lake City neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Originally built as an elementary school playground, the park was acquired by Seattle Parks and Recreation in 1987 when the school closed. In 2009, it was named after Virgil Flaim (1923-2006), a prominent figure in the Lake City community who served as the Executive Director of the Lake City Community Center from 1985 to 2004.
The park spans nearly three acres and features a flat, open lawn area surrounded by a gravel path, making it an ideal spot for various recreational activities. The park's layout includes both shaded and sunny areas, catering to different preferences. On one side, visitors can enjoy the shade provided by trees, while the other side offers more sun exposure.
In 2017, the park underwent improvements with the addition of the Lake City Skatespot project. This project not only introduced a small skateboard park but also relocated the basketball court and added other amenities to enhance the park's appeal.
Virgil Flaim Park serves as a central gathering place for the Lake City community, situated near the Lake City Community Center, Lake City Library, and the area's commercial core. Its location and diverse features make it a popular destination for local residents and visitors alike.
