About Cayton Corner Park in Seattle
Cayton Corner Park is a small urban green space located at the intersection of East Madison Street and 19th Avenue in Seattle, Washington. The park serves as a connector between the Capitol Hill and Central District neighborhoods. Named after Horace Cayton, an early Black settler and newspaper publisher in Seattle, the park honors the area's African American history.
The park is currently under development, with construction beginning in summer 2024 and expected completion in spring 2025. Once finished, Cayton Corner Park will provide a much-needed public gathering space in the busy Madison corridor. The design aims to create an accessible and welcoming environment for local residents and passersby.
The park's layout will include a small lawn area, providing a green space for relaxation and informal activities. An accessible pathway will wind through the park, ensuring that visitors of all mobility levels can enjoy the space. To address the site's topography, retaining walls and terracing will be incorporated into the design.
Cayton Corner Park represents a community-driven effort, with local organizations and residents involved in its planning and advocacy over more than a decade. The park's development is funded through a combination of city resources, including the Seattle Park District, and community contributions.
