About Summit Slope Park in Seattle
Summit Slope Park is a small urban park located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Situated at the intersection of East John Street and Summit Avenue East, this compact green space was designed to serve the local community and provide a gathering place in a densely populated area.
The park, formerly known as John and Summit Park, was developed as part of a community-initiated project to enhance the neighborhood. In 2018, Seattle Parks and Recreation completed additional improvements, including the East John Street Enhancement project, which added a bioswale and planting area to improve pedestrian connections.
Summit Slope Park integrates various elements to maximize its limited space. The park features landscaped gardens, grassy areas, and seating options for visitors to relax and enjoy the outdoors. A notable feature is the incorporation of a skate bench, catering to skateboarding enthusiasts in the area.
The park also includes a P-Patch community garden with 24 plots, allowing local residents to grow their own produce and flowers. This feature not only provides gardening opportunities but also contributes to the park's green aesthetic and community-building aspect.
Designed by Mithun for Seattle Parks and Recreation, Summit Slope Park has been recognized for its thoughtful integration of various elements within a small urban footprint. The Seattle Design Commission praised the park for its simple design and detailing, noting how it enhances the neighborhood experience and creates a well-used and beloved community space.
