About Wapato Park in Tacoma
Wapato Park is an 80-acre urban oasis located in Tacoma, Washington. The park is centered around Wapato Lake, a 35-acre freshwater lake that serves as a habitat for diverse wildlife and offers opportunities for fishing and non-motorized boating. A 0.9-mile walking trail encircles the lake, providing visitors with a scenic route for exercise and nature appreciation.
The park's history dates back to 1919 when the land was initially purchased as a potential reservoir site. In the late 1930s, it underwent significant development as part of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. The park features a mix of natural and landscaped areas, including display gardens, forested sections, and open spaces.
Wapato Park is designed to cater to a wide range of recreational activities and community needs. It includes multiple playgrounds for children of different age groups, picnic areas with tables and benches, and a historic pergola that adds architectural interest to the landscape. The park also houses the Skip and Laura Vaughn playground and sprayground, which was dedicated in 2002 as part of ongoing improvements to the park's facilities.
In recent years, Wapato Park has seen further enhancements, including the renovation of trails, the construction of boardwalks to protect wetland areas, and the addition of new pathways to improve accessibility. The park is maintained by Metro Parks Tacoma and supported by community volunteer groups such as the Friends of Wapato Hills Park.
