About Nikkei Park in Vancouver
Nikkei Park, located in the North Image Neighborhood of Northeast Vancouver, Washington, is a 5-acre park that opened in 2021. The park was named to honor the Japanese American truck farmers who were integral to the local agricultural community in the early 20th century. By 1930, Japanese Americans made up 47% of Clark County's truck farmers, but during World War II, they were forcibly removed from their homes and sent to internment camps. The name "Nikkei," meaning Japanese emigrants and their descendants, was chosen through a community survey to acknowledge this history and celebrate the resilience and contributions of the Japanese American community.
The park features a unique playground with dinosaur-themed play equipment, including rideable dinosaurs and a sand pit where children can dig for "fossils." This prehistoric theme adds an educational and imaginative element to the park, making it a popular spot for families. Nikkei Park also includes a paved walking trail, a half-court basketball setup, and ample grassy areas for recreational activities like cornhole or croquet. The design of the park aims to create a space filled with beauty, joy, and a sense of belonging, reflecting the legacy of the families it honors.
While the park is a lively and engaging space, it can become crowded, especially on sunny days, and parking is limited. Visitors are encouraged to use overflow parking at Image Elementary during non-school hours. The park's hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, allowing for early morning walks or evening relaxation. Through its thoughtful design and historical significance, Nikkei Park serves as both a recreational space and a reminder of the community's past.
