About Columbia Springs in Vancouver
Columbia Springs is a 100-acre urban natural area located in Vancouver, Washington. Situated along the Old Evergreen Highway, this environmental education center offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore and experience nature within city limits. The site encompasses diverse habitats and serves as both an outdoor recreation area and an educational facility.
Originally built in 1938 as part of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) program, Columbia Springs is home to the historic Vancouver Trout Hatchery. The hatchery, which remains operational, produces approximately 780,000 trout, chum salmon, and steelhead annually. It is now managed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The park features over two miles of hiking trails that wind through various ecosystems, allowing visitors to observe local flora and fauna. Two wildlife viewing decks provide opportunities for nature watching and photography. The site includes several bodies of water, including West Biddle Lake, East Biddle Lake, and various ponds that support the hatchery operations.
Columbia Springs offers a range of educational programs and events throughout the year. These include guided nature walks, environmental workshops, and seasonal festivals. The center's programs reach over 6,000 K-5 students annually through field trips and the Salmon in the Classroom initiative.
Visitors can enjoy picnicking, dog walking (on leash), and fish feeding at a designated pond. The park is open daily from dawn to dusk and is free to the public. While swimming is not permitted in any of the water bodies, the site provides ample opportunities for passive recreation and nature appreciation.
