About Tank Park in Green Bay
Tank Park is a public recreational area located on Green Bay's west side, bounded by Third Street, Fifth Street, and Tenth Avenue. Originally platted as part of C.L.A. Tank's Fifth Addition to Fort Howard, the park was formally deeded to the City of Fort Howard in 1891 by Madame Tank with the condition that it be used solely as a public park.
The park has undergone several transformations over the years. It was initially called Union Park until the historic Tank Cottage was moved there in 1908, after which it was renamed Tank Park. The cottage served as a museum within the park grounds until 1975 when it was relocated to Heritage Hill State Historical Park.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Tank Park underwent significant redevelopment. The adjacent Greenwood Avenue was closed to create a larger, unified space shared between the park and Tank School. New amenities were added, including tennis courts built on the former location of Tank Cottage.
Today, Tank Park continues to serve the community with various recreational facilities. It features a splash pad, which was reconstructed in 1996, providing a popular spot for children during hot summer days. The park also includes a playground, which has seen improvements over the years, including an upgrade in 2010 benefiting from an NFL grant.
One of the park's distinctive features is its open shelter, which underwent repairs and reconstruction in 2008 and 2009. As part of this renovation, a cupola with railing was added to the top of the structure, enhancing its visual appeal.
Tank Park remains an integral part of Green Bay's park system, offering a mix of recreational opportunities and green space for residents and visitors alike.
