About Saint James Park in Green Bay
St. James Park is a historic public green space located in the heart of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Originally known as Webster Square, the park was one of three public squares donated to the city by John Jacob Astor and Associates of the American Fur Company in 1835. The park was later renamed after St. James Church, which stands across the street.
Situated in the Astor Historic District, St. James Park serves as a central gathering place for the community. The park features a prominent bandshell, constructed in 2002 and designed by Bay Architects. This bandshell hosts the City Band Concerts every Wednesday evening from the second week in June until the second week in August, providing free entertainment for local residents and visitors alike.
The park's layout includes open green spaces ideal for picnics, relaxation, and casual sports activities. Mature trees provide ample shade throughout the grounds, making it a pleasant retreat during warm summer days. The park's central location in the Astor neighborhood makes it easily accessible to residents and adds to the area's charm and historical significance.
St. James Park plays an important role in Green Bay's cultural life, not only through its regular concert series but also as a venue for various community events and gatherings throughout the year. Its presence contributes to the preservation of Green Bay's heritage and offers a tranquil urban oasis for all to enjoy.
