About Sycamore Park in Madison
Sycamore Park is a 71.42-acre community park located on Madison's east side. The park offers a variety of recreational facilities and natural areas for visitors to enjoy. One of its most notable features is a large off-leash dog exercise area, which spans approximately 20 acres and is situated on top of a former landfill site. This dog park is consistently popular and heavily used by local residents and their canine companions.
The park includes several sports facilities, including two adult-sized soccer fields and multiple basketball courts. For those seeking less structured activities, there is also open field space available for casual use.
In 2024, Sycamore Park expanded its offerings with the addition of approximately 1.5 miles of natural surface, bike-optimized singletrack trail. This trail is designed for bikes and other non-motorized uses such as hiking, walking, and snowshoeing. The trail features various surfaces, including natural stone chips, native soil, stone, and wood, with difficulty levels ranging from easy to moderate.
Sycamore Park also features playground equipment, providing recreational opportunities for younger visitors. The park includes paved paths that connect different areas and offer pedestrian and bike access throughout the space.
A sun shelter located on the south side of the park near Nakoosa Trail provides a shaded area for visitors. The park also contains several natural, non-mowed areas, with some undergoing prairie restoration efforts as part of a joint initiative between parks, engineering, and volunteers.
The park's Master Plan, approved in May 2023, outlines future developments and improvements to enhance the park's facilities and user experience.
