About Kosciuszko Park in Milwaukee
Kosciuszko Park is a 37-acre public park located in the Lincoln Village neighborhood on Milwaukee's south side. Established in 1890, the park was originally known as Lincoln Avenue Park before being renamed in 1900 to honor Tadeusz Kościuszko, a Polish-American Revolutionary War hero.
The park features a prominent bronze equestrian statue of Kościuszko, created by Italian sculptor Gaetano Trentanove. Installed in 1904 and dedicated in 1905, the statue was later moved to its current location on the south side of the park in 1951. In 2013, the monument underwent a full restoration.
Kosciuszko Park includes a lagoon that adds to its scenic appeal and provides opportunities for fishing. The park also houses the Kosciuszko Community Center, which offers various recreational facilities and programs for local residents.
During the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, Kosciuszko Park played a significant role as the endpoint for several open housing marches organized by the Milwaukee NAACP Youth Council. These marches, which started on the North Side and ended at the park, symbolized the struggle against housing segregation in the city.
Today, Kosciuszko Park continues to serve as an important green space and community gathering place for Milwaukee's South Side residents, offering a range of recreational activities and facilities.
