About Railroad Park in Birmingham
Railroad Park is a 19-acre green space located in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. The park opened to the public in September 2010 after years of planning and development. It stretches from 14th Street to 18th Street along First Avenue South, situated immediately south of the Norfolk Southern and CSX rail lines that run through downtown Birmingham.
The park was designed by landscape architect Tom Leader and built by Birmingham-based Brasfield & Gorrie. Its design incorporates the city's industrial heritage, with active train tracks running along an elevated viaduct adjacent to the park. The park's topography includes hills and water features created from materials excavated on-site. A series of ponds, streams, and a small lake make up about 30% of the park area, serving both aesthetic and functional purposes for stormwater management and irrigation.
Railroad Park connects Birmingham's downtown area with the Southside neighborhood and the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus. It has become a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike, often referred to as "Birmingham's Living Room." The park hosts various community events, concerts, and recreational activities throughout the year.
The Railroad Park Foundation, a non-profit organization, manages and operates the park through an agreement with the City of Birmingham, which owns the property. The foundation oversees maintenance, security, and programming for the park, ensuring it remains a vibrant public space for the community.
