About East Lake Park in Birmingham
East Lake Park is a 100-acre public park located in the North East Lake neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. The centerpiece of the park is a 45-acre man-made lake that was created in 1886 by damming Roebuck Springs and Village Creek. Originally called Lake Como, it was soon renamed East Lake.
The park was initially developed as a private attraction by the East Lake Land Company to help sell home sites to workers in Birmingham's steel industry. In 1917, the City of Birmingham purchased the property and dedicated it as a public park in 1918.
East Lake Park quickly became a major recreational center for the Birmingham area after a streetcar line was extended to the park in 1887. Over the years, the park has offered various amusements and activities including a ferris wheel, shooting gallery, boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, golf, baseball, a steamboat, a zoo, and entertainment in the pavilion.
Today, East Lake Park remains one of the largest municipal recreational facilities in Alabama. The park features well-maintained walking paths that circle the lake, creating a 1.1 mile loop that is popular for strolling and exercising. The mature hardwood trees throughout the park provide habitat for many resident and migratory bird species, making it a prime spot for birdwatching.
The lake continues to be a focal point, offering opportunities for fishing and non-motorized boating. An island in the middle of the lake serves as a rookery for several heron species. The park also includes more modern amenities like a playground, picnic areas, and sports facilities.
While East Lake Park has seen periods of decline over the years, recent revitalization efforts aim to restore it as a vibrant community green space and recreational area for Birmingham residents.
