About Arthur Shores Park in Birmingham
Arthur Shores Park is a 2.67-acre urban green space located in Birmingham, Alabama. Situated on a triangular plot of land between 19th Street North, F. L. Shuttlesworth Drive, and 12th and 13th Avenue North, the park is across from Oak Hill Cemetery in the Druid Hills neighborhood of Birmingham's Northside community.
Established by the Birmingham City Council with support from the Druid Hills Neighborhood Association and Druid Hills Concerned Citizens, the park was dedicated in 1986 and named in honor of Arthur Shores, a prominent attorney and Civil Rights leader.
The park features a circular trellis, a small play area, and picnic pavilions. In 1992, a small terraced amphitheater was added to the park, funded by $600,000 in bond funding. The park also includes a granite monument dedicated to Arthur Shores, commissioned through a fund-raising campaign led by Birmingham Times publisher Jesse Lewis.
Arthur Shores Park provides a serene environment for visitors, offering opportunities for walking, family activities, and community gatherings. Its location and features make it a valuable green space in the urban landscape of Birmingham, contributing to the city's network of parks and recreational areas.
