About Centennial Park in Anchorage
Centennial Park in Anchorage, Alaska is a multi-purpose recreational area that serves as both a campground and a public park. Located in east Anchorage near downtown and the Glenn Highway, it provides an ideal starting point for Alaska travelers.
The park's history dates back to 1966 when the property was acquired through land selection. It was named in honor of the Alaska Centennial and initially functioned as a camper park in the summer and a winter sports complex during colder months. At one point, the park featured a ticket booth, tow shack, and a lit alpine ski hill, even hosting winter carnivals in February.
Today, Centennial Park primarily operates as a campground, offering 84 sites suitable for various camping preferences. These include 21 RV sites with electrical hookups, 20 non-electric RV sites, 42 combined RV/tent sites, and two group sites. The campground is set in a wooded area, providing a natural atmosphere despite its proximity to urban amenities.
The park is managed by the Municipality of Anchorage, with the campground office staffed by municipal employees, campground hosts, and overnight security seven days a week. Visitors can obtain local information and travel updates from the historic log cabin office.
Recent improvements to the park have focused on enhancing visitor experience and infrastructure. These upgrades include electrical and Wi-Fi improvements, drainage and landscape enhancements, and plans for bathroom upgrades and a new pavilion.
Centennial Park's location offers convenient access to Anchorage's attractions while providing a camp-like setting. It serves as an excellent base for those looking to explore the city or embark on broader Alaskan adventures.
