About Creamery Park in Tempe
Creamery Park is a small but well-equipped public park located in Tempe, Arizona. Spanning 2.8 acres, it is situated along 8th Street and Una Avenue. The park was established in 1999 as part of an agreement between the city and a developer of a nearby residential complex.
Creamery Park is notable for its historical significance. Unlike many parks in Tempe that are named after prominent citizens or service clubs, this park was named to honor a significant element of the community's history. The name "Creamery Park" pays tribute to the old Tempe Creamery, which played an important role in the lives of many Tempeans.
The original creamery, built in 1892, began as F.A. Hough's ice plant before being modified to process dairy products. It operated under various names, including Tempe Creamery, Tempe-Mesa Produce Company, and Pacific Creamery. In 1927, it was sold to the Borden Milk Company and remained a major employer in Tempe until its closure in 1953.
Today, Creamery Park serves as a recreational space for the local community. It features a mix of amenities catering to various age groups and interests. The park includes a playground for children, basketball courts for sports enthusiasts, and picnic areas with grilling facilities for families and groups.
One of the park's highlights is its off-leash dog area, providing a space where dogs can play, exercise, and socialize without leashes. This feature makes the park particularly popular among dog owners in the neighborhood.
Creamery Park operates from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m., offering extended hours for community use. Its compact size and range of facilities make it an ideal spot for local residents to enjoy outdoor activities, relax, and connect with the area's history.
