About Waggoner Park in Tempe
Waggoner Park is an 8-acre green space located in Tempe, Arizona. The park is nestled between two schools - C.I. Waggoner Elementary and Kyrene Middle School. This unique arrangement is the result of a land exchange between the city and the Kyrene School District in the late 1970s.
The park is named in honor of C. Ilo Waggoner, a long-time Kyrene School District employee who served for 32 years as a teacher, principal, and finally superintendent until his retirement in 1972. Waggoner's contributions to the community were significant, overseeing the district's growth from a small rural school system to a more expansive one that required new facilities.
Waggoner Park, along with the adjacent schools, forms a 20-acre campus that serves as an active center of the community. The park provides a space for both recreational activities and community gatherings, continuing the legacy of its namesake in enriching the lives of Tempe residents.
The park is open from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m., offering ample time for visitors to enjoy its facilities. Its location within a residential area makes it a convenient spot for local families and individuals to engage in outdoor activities and relaxation.
