About Himmel Park in Tucson

Himmel Park is a 24.3-acre urban oasis located in central Tucson, Arizona. Established in 1935, the park serves as a vital recreational space for the surrounding Sam Hughes neighborhood and broader Tucson community. The land for the park was originally sold to the City of Tucson by Alvina Himmel Edmonson, with the agreement that it be named after her parents.

The park features expansive grassy areas dotted with mature trees, providing ample shade and a pleasant environment for visitors. A wide, tree-lined walking path bisects the park, offering a scenic route for strolls and exercise. The verdant landscape is home to various bird species, including vermilion flycatchers, gila woodpeckers, hummingbirds, northern cardinals, and lesser goldfinches, adding to the park's natural charm.

Himmel Park includes multiple sports facilities to cater to diverse recreational needs. The park boasts four soccer fields, several baseball/softball fields, and eight lighted tennis courts. A 25-yard swimming pool, originally built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration, is available for public use during summer months.

For families and children, Himmel Park offers two playgrounds, one on each end of the park, featuring slides and swings. A small knoll on the north side of the park serves as a natural amphitheater for local productions and events.

The park is also home to the Himmel Park Branch Library, Tucson Public Library's first branch location, built in 1961 in the park's northeast corner. This library includes a small children's area, one study room, and one meeting room, further enhancing the park's community value.

Himmel Park's central location and diverse amenities make it a popular destination for picnickers, dog-walkers, sports enthusiasts, and families seeking a peaceful retreat in the heart of Tucson.
