About Gateway Park in Yuma
Gateway Park is a scenic urban oasis located in the heart of Yuma, Arizona, situated along the banks of the Colorado River. The park offers visitors a blend of natural beauty and recreational facilities, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
The park features a sandy beach area along the Colorado River, providing opportunities for swimming and sunbathing during the warmer months. A 1.5-mile paved walkway follows the river, allowing visitors to enjoy leisurely strolls or bike rides while taking in the picturesque views of the water and surrounding landscape.
Gateway Park is home to the historic Ocean-to-Ocean Bridge, built in 1915 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This bridge, the earliest example of a through truss bridge in Arizona, spans the Colorado River and adds a touch of historical significance to the park's scenery.
The park's location at the end of Madison Avenue in Historic Downtown Yuma makes it easily accessible and a convenient spot for urban recreation. The shade provided by the freeway bridge above creates a comfortable environment for visitors, especially during hot summer days.
Gateway Park connects to both the East and West Wetland Parks, allowing for extended exploration of Yuma's riverside green spaces. These connected areas offer opportunities for wildlife viewing and appreciation of the local ecosystem.
