About Roxaboxen Park in Yuma
Roxaboxen Park is a unique public space located in Yuma, Arizona. This small park, approximately half an acre in size, sits at the corner of 2nd Avenue and 8th Street. Unlike typical parks, Roxaboxen Park does not feature grass or standard playground equipment. Instead, it preserves the natural desert landscape, reminiscent of early 20th century Yuma.
The park's design and concept are inspired by the children's book "Roxaboxen" by Alice McLerran. This book recounts the author's mother's childhood experiences growing up in Yuma during the early 1900s. The park aims to recreate the imaginative play environment described in the book, encouraging visitors, especially children, to use their creativity and imagination.
Roxaboxen Park includes an ADA-accessible pedestrian path, allowing visitors to explore the area safely. Informational displays are scattered throughout the park, providing historical context and details about the book that inspired its creation. The park also features seating areas where visitors can rest and observe.
In May 2019, the park underwent beautification as part of the Arizona Creative Communities Institute (AZ-CCI) – DIY Murals Yuma project. This initiative resulted in the addition of a mural, painted sidewalk squares, and numerous painted rocks, all created by community members. These artistic elements add color and character to the park's desert landscape.
Visitors are encouraged to participate in the park's ongoing development by leaving painted rocks from their home states or towns. For those unable to visit in person, the park accepts mailed painted rocks, which staff members place within the park, fostering a sense of community involvement and connection.
