King School Park

King School Park is a 1.72-acre public space located in Berkeley, California. The park is owned by the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) and maintained by the City of Berkeley through a joint-use agreement. Originally built in 1974 with Measure Y funds, it opened to the public in 1979 to meet the recreational needs of Berkeley's citizens.

The park features play areas for different age groups. There is a tot play area for children aged 2-5, which was replaced after a giant eucalyptus tree fell and destroyed the original playground in February 2019. Additionally, a new play element for children aged 5-12, dubbed the "DNA Tower," was installed where the fallen eucalyptus tree once stood. These renovations, along with various accessibility and site improvements, were completed in November 2021.

King School Park offers a variety of recreational facilities. It includes tennis courts, a running track, and basketball courts. The park also has a grassy area and picnic table spaces, providing opportunities for relaxation and outdoor gatherings. A gym is available on-site, though access may be limited during school hours.

The park's hours of operation vary depending on whether it is a school day or not. On school days, the joint-use areas are open from 6 PM to dusk or 8 PM. On non-school days, these areas are accessible from dawn or 6 AM until dusk or 8 PM. The tot play area has more extended hours, being open from dawn or 6 AM to dusk or 8 PM every day, unless otherwise posted at the principal's discretion.

King School Park serves as a valuable community resource, offering a blend of recreational facilities for both school use and public enjoyment. Its recent renovations have enhanced its appeal and functionality, making it a popular destination for local residents and families.
