About Halcyon Commons Park in Berkeley
Halcyon Commons is a small community-designed park located in Berkeley, California. Originally a 28-space parking lot, this 0.2-acre (8,710 sq. ft.) green space was transformed through a grassroots effort led by the Halcyon Neighborhood Association in the early 1990s.
The park features a large grassy area surrounded by flowering shrubs and trees, providing a peaceful oasis in the urban environment. Its creation involved extensive community participation, including hands-on design workshops and volunteer planting efforts.
Halcyon Commons serves as a central gathering place for the neighborhood, offering residents a space for relaxation and recreation. The park's development was a collaborative effort between local residents, businesses, and the City of Berkeley, showcasing the power of community initiative.
In 1997, Halcyon Commons received an Excellence in Design award from Berkeley Design Advocates, recognizing its successful transformation from a utilitarian parking lot to a vibrant public space.
The park is open daily from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, unless otherwise indicated.
