About Dave Brubek Park in Concord
Dave Brubeck Park is an 8-acre neighborhood park located on the north side of Concord Boulevard between Mendocino Drive and Denkinger Road, adjacent to Concord High School in Concord, California. The park is named after Dave Brubeck, a renowned jazz musician and Concord native.
The park features gently mounded turf with shade trees surrounding a large open meadow. At the center of the park is a raised concrete stage, which has historically been used for community events. One of the most notable past events held at the park was the Concord Summer Festival, later known as the Concord Jazz Festival, which took place there from 1969 through 1974. The festival drew up to 17,000 attendees and featured famous jazz musicians including Ella Fitzgerald, Pearl Bailey, George Shearing, and Dave Brubeck himself.
From 1988 to 2013, Dave Brubeck Park was also home to the Singing Flag 4th of July performances, a patriotic community celebration that became a tradition for many Concord families. The event included performances by the Calvary Temple Church Choir, tributes to military veterans, and fireworks displays.
Today, the park serves as a quiet neighborhood gathering place. It provides a space for relaxation, picnicking, and casual recreation. The park's layout includes a children's playground, picnic areas, and a gravel walking path that winds through the grounds. The large shade trees offer visitors respite from the sun on warm days.
While the park may not host large-scale events as it did in the past, it remains an important part of Concord's community landscape, offering residents a peaceful green space for outdoor enjoyment and serving as a reminder of the city's rich musical heritage.
