Courthouse Park is a historic public space located in downtown Fresno, California. Established in the 1870s, this park has been a central gathering place for the community for over 150 years. The park occupies four city blocks at the intersection of Mariposa and L streets, encompassing the area surrounding the Fresno County Courthouse.
The park's history dates back to 1872 when the Central Pacific Railroad offered four blocks of land for a park and future courthouse site. Initially, citizens felt the location was too far from the business district, but it was eventually accepted. In 1874, the county seat moved to Fresno, and construction of a courthouse in the park's center began, cementing the park's role as the heart of county government.
Over the years, Courthouse Park has witnessed numerous significant events in Fresno's history. It has been a venue for public gatherings, celebrations, and solemn occasions. Notable events include the funeral for Dr. Rowell and a Thanksgiving service at 2 a.m. on November 11, 1918, marking the end of World War I.
