About Deukmejian Wilderness Park in Glendale

Deukmejian Wilderness Park is a 709-acre natural area located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains at the northernmost edge of Glendale, California. The park offers a diverse landscape predominantly composed of chaparral and sage scrub, with secluded streamside woodlands and scattered remnants of big-cone spruce woodland in Dunsmore and Cook's Canyons.

The park's elevation ranges from approximately 2,159 feet at the entrance to 4,775 feet in the northeast corner, providing visitors with spectacular views of the Crescenta Valley and the Los Angeles basin. Trails wind through the rugged terrain, allowing hikers to explore the park's natural beauty and observe local wildlife.

At the southern part of the property, visitors will find the Park Center area, which spans about 12 acres. This developed section includes the historic Stone Barn Nature Center (originally known as Le Mesnager Barn), the Glendale Park Ranger Station, parking facilities, restrooms, and picnic areas. The Stone Barn Nature Center serves as an educational hub, offering exhibits about the local ecology, geology, and history of the area.

Deukmejian Wilderness Park is bordered on three sides (north, west, and east) by the Angeles National Forest, creating a seamless connection to the larger wilderness area. The park's southern edge is primarily occupied by a County debris basin and sediment placement site, also known as a spreading ground.

The park is open from 6:00 a.m. until one hour after sunset, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural surroundings throughout the day. It serves as an important recreational and educational resource for the community, providing opportunities for hiking, nature observation, and learning about the local ecosystem.
