About Dunsmore Park in Glendale
Dunsmore Park in La Crescenta, California, is a 9.63-acre neighborhood park owned and operated by the City of Glendale. The park offers a variety of recreational facilities and green spaces for community use.
Originally part of the Mount Lukens Sanitarium (later renamed Dunsmore Sanitarium), the land was converted into a public park in 1957. During this conversion, the City of Glendale preserved some elements of the property's history, including the community house and distinctive rock gateways and retaining walls.
These walls, dating back to the 1940s and 50s, were a project of Milton Hofert, the former sanitarium's owner. They feature an eclectic mix of locally-sourced granite and colorful geologic fragments from western states, along with embedded artifacts ranging from decorative items to industrial pieces. While some of these unique embellishments have been removed over time, the walls remain a point of interest in the park.
Dunsmore Park provides a range of facilities for visitors of all ages. The park includes areas for both active recreation and passive enjoyment, making it a versatile space for community gatherings and individual use. Its operating hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily.
