About Carthay Circle Park in Los Angeles
Carthay Circle Park is a small urban park located in the Carthay Circle neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Situated at the intersection of McCarthy Vista and Crescent Heights Boulevard, this park serves as a green space for the local community.
The park is maintained by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. It operates from dawn to dusk daily, providing residents and visitors with a place for relaxation and outdoor activities throughout the week.
One of the notable features of Carthay Circle Park is a statue called "The Pioneer," designed by Henry Lion. This statue, also known as "Dan the Miner," stands about seven feet tall and weighs 512 pounds. It was originally installed on September 25, 1924, as part of a fountain in the park. The statue has had an eventful history, including being stolen in 2009 during a period of rising copper prices. However, it was subsequently recovered, repaired, and reinstalled in 2010, continuing to serve as a local landmark.
The park's location within the historic Carthay Circle neighborhood adds to its significance. Carthay Circle is known for its unique urban planning, which included the integration of green spaces like this park into the community design.
