Point Molate Beach Park

Point Molate Beach Park is a 413-acre shoreline park located in Richmond, California, approximately 1.5 miles north of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. The park features 1.4 miles of shoreline along the San Francisco Bay, offering visitors expansive views of the bay, including Mount Tamalpais, Mount Saint Helena, and the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.

This park was formerly part of a U.S. Navy fuel storage and transfer facility that closed in 1995. The City of Richmond acquired the property in 2003 and opened it to the public as a park. Point Molate Beach Park reopened in 2013 after a period of closure for cleanup and restoration work.

The beach at Point Molate is known for its clean and expansive shoreline with gentle waves. Visitors can walk along the beach or on the grass area above. The park provides opportunities for activities such as beachcombing, picnicking, and enjoying the natural surroundings. Many visitors come to search for sea glass and interesting rocks along the shore.

Point Molate Beach Park is relatively undeveloped and offers a more rugged, natural experience compared to more manicured urban parks. The area above the beach includes coastal prairie and northern coastal bluff scrub habitats, which are considered rare in the East Bay region. These grasslands feature a high diversity of native perennial grasses and wildflowers.

Access to the beach is via a short trail from the parking area. Visitors should be aware that the site's former industrial use means some areas may have uneven terrain or remnants of old structures. The park's relative isolation contributes to its tranquil atmosphere, making it a peaceful spot for those seeking a quiet beach experience.
