Shields-Reid Park

Shields-Reid Park is a 5.9-acre public park located in Richmond, California. The park serves as a vital community space in the North Richmond neighborhood, offering various recreational facilities and amenities for residents of all ages.

In 2021, Shields-Reid Park received an $8 million grant from the California Department of Parks and Recreation for a comprehensive revitalization project. This project aims to improve health, wellness, safety, and access to outdoor recreation while catalyzing community revitalization for diverse age groups and abilities.

The park renovation includes several new features designed to enhance the community experience. Among these are a children's play area, a bike pump track, and a stage and performance area for community events. The project also incorporates elements to promote physical fitness and environmental awareness, such as a fitness zone and a habitat garden.

Art plays a significant role in the park's revitalization. Five local artists have been commissioned to create and install large-scale artworks throughout the park, including mosaic tile artworks, murals, and sculptures. These art installations are intended to add beauty and cultural significance to the space.

Shields-Reid Park is more than just a recreational area; it's a hub for community activities. The park includes the Shields-Reid Community Center, which offers various programs and services to local residents. The center is open on weekdays and hosts activities such as after-school programs and fitness classes.
