Pantoja Park

Pantoja Park, located in the Marina district of downtown San Diego, California, holds the distinction of being the city's oldest park. Established in 1850, this historic green space is named after Don Juan Pantoja y Arriola, a Spanish navigator who created the first map of San Diego Bay in 1782.

Spanning 1.75 acres, Pantoja Park serves as a tranquil oasis amidst the urban landscape of downtown San Diego. The park features a large grassy area, providing ample space for various activities and relaxation. One of its most notable features is the collection of mature trees, including several towering old fig trees, which offer generous shade to visitors.

At the heart of Pantoja Park stands a statue of Benito Juárez, the 26th president of Mexico. This statue, gifted by the Mexican government in 1981, serves as a focal point and adds historical significance to the park. The park's layout includes walking paths that meander through the grounds, allowing visitors to enjoy leisurely strolls and appreciate the lush surroundings.

Pantoja Park's historical importance is further underscored by its designation as the seventh San Diego Historic Landmark in 1969, just two years after the formation of the city's Historical Resources Board. The park is surrounded by low-rise condominium buildings dating back to the 1980s and 1990s, including Park Row, The Watermark, The Brickyard, Marina Park, and Columbia Place.
