About Raymond Kimbell Playground in San Francisco
Raymond Kimbell Playground Park is a community park located at the corner of Geary Boulevard and Steiner Street in San Francisco, California. The park serves as a welcome respite in a very urban part of the city, offering open spaces and recreational facilities for visitors of all ages to enjoy.
The park underwent a significant renovation in 2015, funded by a $3.3 million allocation from the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks bond. This renovation included upgrades to the play area, improvements to the landscape, and enhancements to the overall safety infrastructure. The park now features modern amenities while maintaining its role as a central gathering place for the local community.
One of the notable features of Raymond Kimbell Playground Park is its athletic fields. Renovated in 2010, these fields are among the busiest in San Francisco. The addition of synthetic turf and lighting has significantly increased the available play time, adding 9,582 hours of use. These improvements allow the fields to host a variety of sports, including soccer, football, baseball, softball, and lacrosse.
The park also emphasizes water conservation in its design. During the renovation, the area of irrigated non-athletic ornamental turf was reduced from 2.5 acres to 1 acre through the use of water-wise plantings and drought-resistant no-mow turf. Over 2,000 water-wise shrubs and perennials, along with 52 new trees, were added to support local habitat. The park's meadows were contoured to help capture rainwater, further enhancing its environmental sustainability.
