McKinley Square

McKinley Square is a small neighborhood park located in the Potrero Hill district of San Francisco, California. Named after President William McKinley, the park dates back to the late 1870s and is one of the city's 22 historical parks. Situated at the intersection of Vermont, San Bruno, and 20th streets, this sun-drenched open space offers stunning views of the Mission district and serves as a central gathering point for the local community.

The park features three distinct recreation zones known as Designated Park Areas (DPAs). The first is a children's playground, installed in 1999 through the efforts of local families and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department. This fenced area is designed for safe use by families with young children under 9 years old.

The second area is a multi-use open space with turf, benches, and scenic viewpoints. City codes require dogs to be leashed in this section to ensure peaceful enjoyment for all visitors. The third zone, known locally as the western hillside, is an off-leash dog play area spanning approximately 2 acres. This section maintains much of its original, rustic condition and offers a mix of native and non-native plant species along with walking paths.

McKinley Square Park is maintained through a combination of city efforts and dedicated volunteer work. The Friends of McKinley Square Park, a neighborhood advocacy group, organizes regular Corporate Days of Service, bringing in volunteers to help with park upkeep and restoration projects.

Visitors to McKinley Square can enjoy picnic areas, with several tables available for reservation in both the playground and turf areas. The park is open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, providing ample opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy this charming urban oasis.
