About Kellogg Park in Ventura
Kellogg Park is a 2.4-acre community park located in the Westside neighborhood of Ventura, California. The park, which opened to the public in April 2018, was developed as part of a collaborative effort between the City of Ventura, the Trust for Public Land, and local community members.
The design of Kellogg Park is centered around a quarter-mile looped walking trail that encircles the park's main features. A notable element is the natural "river" stormwater swale, which serves both as an aesthetic feature and a functional component of the park's infrastructure. This swale is designed to detain and infiltrate runoff from large storm events, helping to alleviate local flooding issues and improve runoff water quality.
The park's layout includes distinct areas for various activities. There are two separate playground areas: one designed for children aged 2-5 years and another for those aged 5-12 years. These play areas are divided by a ridge feature that offers additional climbing opportunities. The park also features a "Jack-and-Jill" artificial-turf slide hill, providing a unique play experience for children.
For community gatherings, Kellogg Park offers a multi-generational area equipped with beanbag toss games and game tables. A small amphitheater with varied seating serves as both a performance space and the terminus of the park's stormwater infrastructure. The amphitheater's stage doubles as a public art piece, incorporating a pebble mosaic created by local artist Kevin Carman.
Sustainability is a key aspect of Kellogg Park's design. The park utilizes native plantings, minimal turf, and water-efficient irrigation to reduce water demand. These features, combined with the stormwater management system, reflect the park's commitment to environmental responsibility.
Along the northern boundary of the park, there are small community garden plots, providing local residents with the opportunity to grow their own produce and foster a sense of community engagement.
