About Westminster Station Park & Nature Playground in Denver
Westminster Station Nature Play Park is a unique outdoor space located in Westminster, Colorado, near Denver. The park opened in November 2021 and covers nearly 5 acres of space dedicated to equity, accessibility, and environmental stewardship. It is designed to connect children with nature and engage all five senses during outdoor play.
The park features a variety of natural elements and structures that encourage imaginative and active play. Visitors can climb tree houses, scale a mini mountain, navigate switchback trails, and dig for replica dinosaur fossils. The playground includes custom tree forts and rope bridges that connect various features within the park. There is also a sand play area with realistic dinosaur fossils, a bubbling spiral rock fountain, and a cascading water feature that children can play in and around.
The design of Westminster Station Nature Play Park was a collaborative effort involving the City of Westminster, Matrix Design Group, and several consultants. During the planning stages in 2017, the city worked with sixth-grade classes at Colorado STEM Academy to gather input from children who would use the playground. The park's creation was made possible in part by grants from Adams County Open Space, Great Outdoors Colorado, the Colorado Lottery, and the Westminster Legacy Foundation.
Westminster Station Nature Play Park is part of the larger Westminster Station Park, which serves multiple functions including regional flood detention and supporting the adjacent RTD Westminster Station. The park provides a unique opportunity for children to connect with nature in an urban setting, offering a more engaging and long-lasting play experience compared to traditional playgrounds.
