About Berkeley Park in Denver
Berkeley Lake Park is an 83-acre public park located in northwest Denver, Colorado. The park is centered around the 34-acre Berkeley Lake, which serves as its primary feature and focal point. Originally established in 1906, Berkeley Lake Park has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century when it was part of Denver's expanding park system.
The park offers exceptional views of the Rocky Mountains and provides a variety of recreational opportunities for visitors. A paved trail approximately one mile in length encircles Berkeley Lake, allowing for walking, jogging, and cycling. The lake itself is used for fishing and non-motorized boating activities.
Berkeley Lake Park has undergone several changes over the years. In the 1960s, the construction of Interstate 70 bisected the northern portion of the park, separating it from the Willis Case Golf Course. Despite this alteration, the park remains a popular destination for local residents and visitors alike.
The park features a mix of open grassy areas and mature trees, providing both sunny and shaded spaces for relaxation and recreation. Several picnic areas are available throughout the park, offering opportunities for outdoor gatherings and family outings.
In addition to its natural features, Berkeley Lake Park includes various recreational facilities to cater to different interests and age groups. The William H. Smiley Branch of the Denver Public Library, located within the park, adds an educational component to the park's offerings.
Berkeley Lake Park is part of the Denver Park and Parkway System, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, recognizing its significance in the city's urban planning and recreational history.
