About Cottage Park in Lakewood
Cottage Park is a recently developed public space located in Lakewood, Colorado. The park, which opened in July 2021, occupies a 0.7-acre site on S. Cody Street. This land was formerly home to the Meadowlark Cottages and was acquired by the city from the Jefferson County School District in 2000.
The park's development came after a public engagement process in 2019, where residents provided input on the name and desired amenities for the space. Prior to becoming a park, the site housed two buildings constructed in the 1960s that served as elementary classrooms for South Lakewood Elementary School and later as a preschool facility. These structures were demolished in October 2019 to make way for the park's creation.
Cottage Park features a variety of elements designed to engage visitors of all ages. The park includes open green spaces for casual play and relaxation, as well as more structured recreational facilities. One of the unique features of the park is a sandstone labyrinth, which provides an interesting walkthrough experience for visitors.
The park also incorporates public art into its design. Three art bollards have been installed along the park's paths, adding visual interest and a whimsical touch to the landscape. These artistic elements contribute to creating a distinct character for the park within the Lakewood community.
