About Franklin Square in Washington
Franklin Park is a historic urban park located in downtown Washington, D.C. Occupying an entire city block of 4.79 acres, it is bordered by K Street on the north, 13th Street on the east, I Street on the south, and 14th Street on the west. Originally established in 1832, the park was created to protect natural springs that once served as a water source for the White House.
In September 2021, Franklin Park reopened after undergoing a significant $21 million renovation. This project was a collaborative effort between the National Park Service, the District of Columbia government, and the DowntownDC Business Improvement District. The renovation aimed to transform the park into a more active, flexible, and sustainable urban space while respecting its historic character.
The redesigned park features an expanded and restored central fountain plaza with interactive jets, providing a focal point for visitors. New landscaping and improved tree canopy enhance the park's natural beauty and provide shade. The renovation also included the addition of a children's garden, offering a dedicated space for younger visitors to play and explore.
Accessibility was a key consideration in the park's redesign. New ADA-compliant sidewalks and pathways were installed, making the park more navigable for all visitors. Enhanced lighting and additional seating areas were also incorporated, creating a more welcoming environment for daytime and evening use.
Franklin Park now serves as a multifunctional space for the community, offering areas for both active recreation and quiet relaxation. It hosts various events and programs, making it a vibrant destination for local residents, workers, and visitors to the heart of Washington, D.C.
