National Mall

The National Mall is a historic and iconic park located in the heart of Washington, D.C. Stretching over 2 miles from the Lincoln Memorial on the west end to the U.S. Capitol on the east end, it serves as America's most-visited national park and is often referred to as "America's front yard."

This expansive green space encompasses approximately 309.2 acres between the Capitol steps and the Lincoln Memorial. The Mall is home to numerous significant monuments and memorials, including the Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and Korean War Veterans Memorial. These structures honor American forefathers and heroes who made ultimate sacrifices in service to the country.

The National Mall's history dates back to 1791 when it was conceived as part of Pierre L'Enfant's original plan for the city of Washington. It has since evolved through various developments, including the McMillan Plan of 1901-1902, which established much of its current layout. Today, the Mall serves multiple purposes: it's a place to learn about and commemorate the nation's cultural heritage, a location for exercising First Amendment rights, a gathering space for presidential inaugurations, and a recreational park.

The park features over 300 acres of turf and more than 9,000 trees, including nearly 2,300 American elm trees. It contains over 26 miles of pedestrian sidewalks and 8 miles of bike trails, providing ample space for visitors to explore and enjoy the outdoors. The National Mall hosts numerous events throughout the year, with the National Park Service processing over 6,000 permit applications annually for various gatherings and celebrations.
