About Plaza of the Americas in Gainesville
Plaza of the Americas is a major open space located at the heart of the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida. Established in 1925, the plaza serves as a central gathering place and quad for students, faculty, and visitors.
The plaza is bounded by several prominent campus buildings, including Library West, Peabody Hall, the University Auditorium, and the Chemistry Building. It features a large grassy lawn area shaded by mature live oak trees, many of which were planted when the plaza was first created.
In 1931, the space was officially designated as the Plaza of the Americas to honor the University's hosting of the first meeting of the Institute of Inter-American Affairs. At that time, 21 live oak trees were planted to represent the 21 nations that attended the meeting.
Throughout its history, the Plaza of the Americas has been an important site for student activities, gatherings, protests, and events. It continues to be a popular spot for studying, relaxing, and socializing on campus. The open green space and canopy of oak trees provide a pleasant outdoor environment in the center of the university grounds.
In 2008, the Plaza of the Americas was designated as a contributing property to the University of Florida Campus Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places. A major renovation of the plaza, including new landscaping and amenities, was completed in 2017.
