About Hammond Park in Jacksonville
Hammond Park is a 13.7-acre public park located in west Jacksonville, Florida, at the intersection of 12th Street and Melson Avenue. The park has a rich history dating back to 1923 when the property was part of a site used for airplane takeoffs and landings, known as Paxon Field after its owner, E. H. Paxon.
In 1955, the area opened as Paxon Park, but it was later renamed to honor Duval County Commissioner Joseph F. Hammond (1885-1967), who served almost continuously from 1921 to 1961. Hammond also held the position of president of the National Association of County Officials during his tenure.
The park's location is significant, with three area schools and the Hammond Senior Center (formerly the Youth Center) situated nearby. This proximity makes it a popular recreational spot for local residents and students alike.
Over the years, Hammond Park has undergone several improvements to enhance its facilities. In 1994, a major renovation of the ball fields took place. A decade later, in 2004, an improvement project added a new building featuring a two-story scorebox, restrooms, and a handicap-accessible concession stand, further increasing the park's functionality and accessibility.
