About Boone Park in Jacksonville
Boone Park is a 28-acre public park located in the Avondale area of Jacksonville, Florida. The park runs from Park Street to Herschel Street and then from Herschel to St. Johns Avenue.
The City of Jacksonville purchased most of the property for the park from William Elijah Boone and four other owners in 1926. Boone was an industrialist who bought and rebuilt locomotives, which he leased to local industries in North Florida and South Georgia.
In 1937, a "little house" was constructed on the grounds for use by the Girl Scouts. The first tennis courts were built sometime prior to 1946. After a tennis clubhouse opened in 1950, the park hosted major public tennis tournaments for decades.
Boone Park features wooded scenery with large shade trees, providing a tranquil environment within the urban setting. The park contains paved walking trails that gently wind through the grounds. There are two separate playground areas - one on the St. Johns Avenue side and another on the Park Street side.
In recent years, the park has undergone several renovations and improvements, spearheaded by the Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) organization. In 2022, four pickleball courts were added to the existing tennis complex.
Boone Park serves as a popular destination for families, offering a mix of recreational facilities and natural spaces for relaxation and outdoor activities. Its central location in the Avondale neighborhood makes it easily accessible to residents and visitors alike.
