About Exchange Club Park in Jacksonville
Exchange Club Island is a unique 34-acre park located in the St. Johns River, just east of downtown Jacksonville, Florida. This urban island oasis is only accessible by water, making it a distinctive destination for boaters, kayakers, and paddleboarders.
The island was formed around 1940 as a result of dredging operations by the Army Corps of Engineers. Initially known as Mud Island, it was later dedicated to the Board of County Commissioners of Duval County in 1956 for use as a public park. The Exchange Club, a local civic group, helped transform the island into a recreational area, leading to its current name.
Today, Exchange Club Island offers visitors a serene escape from the bustling city. The park features a nature trail that loops around the island, allowing visitors to explore its lush vegetation and observe local wildlife. Several picnic shelters are scattered throughout the island, providing shaded areas for relaxation and outdoor meals.
At the southern end of the island, a boat dock allows easy access for watercraft. The park also includes a kayak launch, facilitating entry for non-motorized vessels. A wheelchair-accessible path leads to one of the picnic pavilions and grill area, ensuring the park is inclusive for visitors with mobility challenges.
Exchange Club Island is open from sunrise to sunset, offering a peaceful retreat for nature enthusiasts, picnickers, and those seeking a unique outdoor experience in the heart of Jacksonville's waterways.
